South Daytona residents petition city for vote in power case

Residents opposed to the city buying its electrical distribution system from Florida Power & Light submitted a petition Monday at City Hall seeking an August referendum so voters, not city leaders, can ultimately decide.
Armed with more than the 757 necessary signatures, representatives of Take Back Our Power — a political action committee funded by FPL — are looking to change the city charter in the hope that residents can determine if South Daytona should spend $15.6 million and run the system. A circuit judge set the price in court last summer and it recently was upheld by the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission.
