Florida legislative leaders: No oil-drilling special session

Florida House Speaker Larry Cretul, R-Ocala, and Senate President Jeff Atwater, R-North Palm Beach, served notice Wednesday they won’t be calling lawmakers back to the state capital to work on a response to the Deepwater Horizon oil spill.

Cretul sent a letter telling his members not to bank on coming back to the Capitol for a special session to provide relief to oil-spill racked Panhandle businesses and workers.

Over the summer, Cretul had appointed six work groups to explore what, if anything, the state could do to respond to the problems exposed by the spill, and the panels have concluded that basically the issues aren’t burning enough to get back to work now.
